I’m very grateful to Ian Donohoe whom sent me the pictures of New Towneley Farm and the surrounding area. Ian’s webpage & other pictures of the pennines. Ian also took Videos of the farm and area.

After discovering that Jonas lived at New Towneley Farm, I did a websearch and Ian’s webpage came up because he has pictures of Towneley pennine area. I wrote to Ian and asked him if he’d heard of New Towneley Farm. He wrote back that only two weeks ago he thought he might have cycled passed the farm. I wrote back asking (very cheeky) if he would take pictures of the farm the next time he was in that area. I must say, Ian did a great job and I’m amazed he biked 5 hrs there and back to get these pictures.

The first picture below is from the Google Earth website. This is a free download and it’s amazing. You are able to view any area in the world with this program. I’ve since found the “Townhouse” historic home in Lttleborough, my old home in Ripponden, Jean Greenwood’s home and my old Friend Diane near Springfield park. and New Towneley Farm, off Flower Scar Road in Todmorden.

FREE DOWNLOAD GOOGLE EARTH.

New Towneley Farm was probably owed by Scaitcliffe Hall when Jonas lived there. There should be a pub called Country Friends Bar and Grill near Jonas’s Farm, at the crossroads of Flowers Scar Road. See picture of the Pub. The only road leading up to the farm from Todmorden is Dog House Lane.

The Country Friends Pub is on Parkin Lane, Todmorden, But it has closed down since the drinking a driving laws affected their clients.

Dog House Lane (on the bottom right) leads to Parkin Lane, turn right at the crossroads of Flower Scar Road, Southall Road and Parkin Lane.to get to Towneley Farm.

DRIVING direction from Littleborough to Dog House Lane in Todmorden: 5.8 miles, 17 minutes If your not able to open up the file: see UK Mapquest..

Country Friends Bar and Grill (which has just changed it’s name, don’t know the new name) is on the cross roads of Flower Scar Road and Parkin Lane. Jonas could have walked in the evening to this pub. It would be nice to get an idea what Jonas saw while lifting a pint; phone 1706-818009 Jonas Farm is through the gate and straight up the hill.

Scaitcliffe Hall (website) is the address of the Coachman, see 1881 Census: The coachman was listed 3 farms From Jonas’s New Towneley Farm.

The Farm is up above a rocky outcrop. Todmorden is at the bottom of the hill where his Nephew had a pub, the Rose and Crown..

Ian wrote: “If you look carefully in the distance you can just make the farm out on the far side of the hill”.  I can see three farms in the distance, so I’m not sure which one he is refering to, but I’m guessing he means the one in the middle back of the picture.

From New Townley Farm, there is a footpath down to Scaitcliffe Hall , but it is a steep one.

The Burnley Road where the Rose and Crown used to be is a very busy main road.

This map shows in yellow the road and junction where the pub (PH) is at Sourhall on the moor. New Townley Farm is almost north of this junction, and there is no road to it as such. It is a rough track. It is driveable with care. The small brown squares on the track are the various farms. This is the only way to get there. Canteen is at Lydgate in the valley. Where it says HOTEL is Scaitcliffe. You can see the brown contour lines of the hill. The closer they are, the steeper the hill.

Old Map: Map obtained from streetmap.co.uk New Towneley Farm is at the base of the letter Y in the word ‘Towneley”.
