THE LITTLES ARE FROM SITTINGBOURNE,

NOTE: Adelaide’s two girls, Gladys and Daisy, inherited money when they were 21. The current, living family thought that the money was inherited from Arthur Little’s Father, William Little. But it is more likely that it was Arthur Little’s Stepfather William Vandepeer, that bequeathed them the money.  He was a fish merchant and shop owner in Kent and probably was quite successful. Arthur’s natural father died about age 44 (1889) just a few years before the 1891 Census and before Arthur had any children. Arthur Little died 25th June 1920, and his Stepfather would have been about age 75 at the time so he could easily have been alive. Arthur’s stepfather made a will, and if his stepson died before he did, then it’s quite understandable that he changed his will to include Gladys and Daisy instead of his stepson, with the prevision that they be 21 at the time they receive their inheritance. There is another belief that Arthur’s father was a minister. He may well have been but he was also a Fish Merchant & shop keeper at the time of the 1901 Census.

Arthur Little died of Pulmonary Tuberculoses age 38 June 25th 1920. Arthur and Adelaide lived at 3478 Dundas St. Toronto Canada with their two daughters Gladys and Daisy. Arthur had been living in Ontario Canada for 20 years and was listed as a Pedlar. His physician was Dr. Herman of 35 St. Johns Rd. The undertaker was William Spears of Prospect Cemetery. Arthur was buried on Saturday, 3:30 PM at Prospect Cemetery, 1450 St. Clair Ave. West Toronto, Ontario Canada

In 1901, Alice Norrington was living in Sittingbourne, 83 miles away from our Adelaide Fry in Holyport. So the question still stands, whom did Adelaide go to Canada with, could Alice and Adelaide have gone over together? There doesn’t seem to be a ships log to answer that question.

Alice married Sydney Little 1 year before Adelaide married Arthur Little.

Arthur and Adelaide have three children, After Arthur Little dies, Adelaide returns to London and Marries Raymond Crabtree (below) and has 4 more children.

    10. Edwin Fry, age 5 months, born 1900, Bray, Berkshire

Annie [Rolls] Fry was only 36 in 1901, she was having children every other year. Going of the list above, she only needs to have two more children to reach the below list. Names remembered by living elder family but not ALL showing up on the 1901 Census either because they aren’t really family members, or they weren’t living at the time or not living at 97 Sturt Green: William, Edwin and John or not in Gladys’s list. Doozer (in her list) was probably one of them. And possibly Arthur and George was a nickname and they could be either John William or Edwin on the 1901 Census. It’s also very possible William, Edwin or John died before Gladys knew them.

List Gladys wrote out in 1984

  1. Adelaide (Listed above) Married Arthur Little in Canada
  2. Blanche Hart, (listed above) children Phyllis and Stan ( Phyllis had son Allan Howden)
  3. Daisy,
  4. Alice Michel (think this is Mitchel) - named after her grandmother. children:- Rennie (think this is Rean that Jean Remembers living down south) & Willie
  5. Millie & Arthur Wood - Children Bubbles, Monica, (would be the Emily listed above)
  6. Doozer Fry - daughter Celia Doozer is probably John, William or Edwin)
  7. Annie Tuffry - children Edna, Winny (there is an Annie listed above)
  8. Harry Fry, There is a Harry listed above
  9. Arthur Fry,
  10. George Fry.

There is confusion about an Auntie Alice. Auntie Alice of Canada is not the same as the one above, as that Alice married Sydney Little (Arthur Little’s brother) and became very close friend (and sister-in-law) to Adelaide and had children-Jack, Clifford, Muriel, Renne

In 1912, Adelaide Fry immigrated to Ontario, Canada, & shortly after Married Arthur Little in Canada, had three children; Gladys, Dorothy (Dinky) & Daisy.

In 1911, Alice Norrington married Arthur Little’s brother Sydney Little in Canada .

Daisy Fry (Adelaide’s Sister) never married. She worked at Marland Hospital in Marland Near Rochdale. When she retired she lived with her sister, Blanch, then lived with Blanche’s daughter Phyllis in Dorset.

There was also a Daisy Little in Canada, whom is Arthur Little’s Sister.

When Adelaide’s husband, Arthur Little died, she returned to London. Her daughter Daisy, lived with Granny Fry in Holyport. Gladys temporarily went living at a Convent where Adelaide went to visit while Adelaide was a maid (went into Service) for a Jewish family that had a pottery shop. Auntie Gladys’s remembers her mother, Adelaide, coming to visit her at the convent and wanted to take this very pretty pink pillow off her to give to Edna, her niece (Annie Tuffry’s child) whom was coming to visit from Canada. When Jean, Gladys’s daughter MANY years later went to visit the Little Family in England, she said that her cousin Edna did not want to meet her. Sounds like Edna was a difficult self-centered person.

Olive, Adelaide’s daughter remembers going down to Holyport with her mother to take a salve for Granny Fry’s ulcerated legs.

Arthur Little had a sister, Daisy Little, and when she married they had a pork shop in Southern England.

It’s a puzzle how Adelaide ended up in Canada. It’s a bit hard to believe she went to Canada by her self, such a long and unpleasant ride on a boat to a county she wouldn’t have known. We do know that the Little’s lived in Sittingbourne, 83 miles from her in Holyport. and some still live in Sittingbourne. Her future husband, Arthur Little’s stepfather was a fishermerchant and store owner and lived on Short Street, Sittingbourne, a few blocks from the sea front where he owned a fishshop. .

Adelaide immigrated to Canada and then married Arthur Little. She was exceptionally friendly with her sister-in-Law Alice [Norrington] Little whom married Sydney, Arthur’s brother. Alice retuned to England often to visit other members of the Little family living in Rochdale, England, as well as her family in Sittingbourne.

1891 Census Harriett Little is the HEAD and widowed. Address 36 West Street, Kent, Sittingbourne
